Swedish cellist Karolina Öhman is an internationally acclaimed performer of contemporary music. Her aim is to awaken an interest in new music and she has premiered many solo and chamber works. As a soloist, she has worked with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, Basel Sinfonietta and Ensemble Namascae and has performed at festivals such as Archipel, Royaumont, ReMusik St Petersburg, Les Jardins Musicaux as well as at the Société de Musique Contemporaine Lausanne.
She is a member of Mondrian Ensmbler Basel, Ensemble neuverBand Basel, Trio SÆITENWIND Basel, Ensemble SCENATET Copenhagen and the Curious Chamber Players Stockholm, and has made guest appearances with Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris, Ensemble Phoenix Basel and Collegium Novum Zürich. In 2008, she founded the cello-percussion duo UmeDuo, which regularly performs across Europe.
Karolina studied under Torleif Thedéen, Thomas Demenga and Thomas Grossenbacher, and completed a solo performance diploma as well as a specialised Masters degree in contemporary music. She was a grant holder at the 2010 Darmstadt Summer Course and has won several prizes, including 1st prize at the 2013 Concours Nicati, the patrons prize at Domnick Cellowettbewerb für Neue Musik Stuttgart 2009, as well 1st prize at the 2010 ZHdK (Zurich Art College) competition for contemporary music. Furthermore, she has received several grants, inculding from Pierino Ambrosoli Foundation Zürich and Ernst Göhner Foundation, and in 2010 was incorporated into the Swiss Migros-Kulturprozent concert agency.
